Events at TU Dortmund University

In a society where racism is commonplace, empowerment spaces can be places where it is possible to take a deep breath. This Empowerment Space explicitly invites students who have a Palestinian family history to create a space for empowerment, exchange of experiences and networking.

We also ask ourselves the questions:

  • What exactly is empowerment?
  • What are the necessary conditions for self-care in our everyday lives and in the given political circumstances?
  • What role do communities and solidarity play in the context of racism and empowerment?

The Online Empowerment Space will be accompanied by Jinan Dib (she/her). Jinan is a sociolinguist and works as a political education consultant on empowerment, criticism of racism and power, anti-discrimination and participation nationwide in both youth and adult education.

The offer is aimed at students of TU Dortmund University, RUB and UDE.

May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Current political debates and the shift to the right, particularly among young voters, are encouraging discussions and debate on topics such as extremism, anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism. A new series of lectures by the Center for Teacher Education (ZLB) addresses how prospective teachers can deal with these issues at school.

Student teachers and all other interested parties from the UDE are invited to attend.

How to prevent anti-democratic tendencies? "Prospective teachers must be sensitized to the task of carrying out discursive prevention work in schools and equipped with the necessary didactic and ethical skills," says Dilek Gürsoy-Posse. She coordinates the DiversiTeach project, which is organizing the new lecture series in cooperation with the Basic and Advanced Training (BuAT) of the ZLB, which will also be continued in the winter semester. The lectures will take place from 16:00 to 18:00 in the library hall on the Essen campus. You can register for the individual events at: diversiteachuni-duede.

This workshop offers insights into the topic, introduces the advice and support services offered by the Scicomm-Support contact point and provides initial practical options for action.

For many Muslim people, religion is an important part of their lives, which visibly or invisibly determines their everyday lives for others. But what does it actually mean to practise the Muslim faith? Does everyone have to keep the commandments? What role does religion actually play for Muslim students or university members in everyday university life
?

The aim of the event is to gain an insight into Muslim life in Dortmund and the Ruhr region and to enter into a dialog with one another.

In light of current global developments, this year's keynote speech on Diversity Day at TU Dortmund University will focus on the topic of hate speech. Journalist, doctor and political scientist Gilda Sahebi will address this particular form of group-based misanthropy and the importance of counter-speech in her presentation "How hate speech endangers democracies and what we can do about it". Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to talk to her and other participants.

In good weather, the event will take place in the green lecture hall at Martin-Schmeißer-Platz (diagonally opposite the Mathetower), in bad weather in lecture hall II at Emil-Figge-Str. 50. Please find out more in advance here(https://stabsstelle-cfv.tu-dortmund.de/vielfalt/diversity-monat/) or on Instagram(Link is external). Registration is not necessary

Anti-Semitism is a problem in many areas of society and is also noticeable at universities. The situation has worsened since the Hamas attack on Israel, with many Jewish students reporting anti-Semitic incidents or universities becoming the site of anti-Semitic agitation. Teachers, staff and students at universities are then often faced with the challenge of responding appropriately. In order to gain confidence in dealing with anti-Semitic incidents, knowledge about its manifestations as well as concrete counter-strategies is required. In the workshop, we will look at current forms of anti-Semitism and discuss possible courses of action using case studies. There will also be room for exchange so that participants can contribute their own examples and questions from the university.

ADIRA is a state-funded anti-discrimination advice center run by the Jewish Community of Dortmund. The office offers advice for those affected by anti-Semitism and discrimination and carries out educational and preventative work on the topic of anti-Semitism.

Target group: Employees

Location: TU Dortmund University

For all TU employees, registration takes place via the internal further education department

What happens when experiences of sexualized violence are not taken seriously? When institutions look the other way - or even protect harassers instead of informing them? In her reading, Franziska Saxler provides insights into her book, which combines scientific findings with personal perspectives. It is about the abuse of power, structural silence - and the question of how we can better protect those affected. An invitation to listen, understand and change.
