For Diversity-Month in May this year, the Staff Unit Equal Opportunites, Family, and Diversity has once again put together a program of events dealing with various aspects of diversity. These include, for example, lectures, exhibitions and discussion rounds dealing with sexism, abuse of power, hate speech, anti-discrimination and gender diversity.

Many events during Diversity Month are not one-off special events. On the contrary: they are already established at TU Dortmund University and are offered on a regular basis.

The aim of Diversity Month is to bring diversity issues into the spotlight and make the activities of the many stakeholders at TU Dortmund University who work every day to make diversity and inclusion in the academic world more visible. Diversity work is a cross-sectional task - together we at TU Dortmund University are responsible for promoting an open and respectful atmosphere in which everyone is welcome. In addition to established exchange and information formats such as the Language Café organized by the International Office or the Diversity Talks organized by the Queer* Peers, Diversity Month in May offers two special highlights.

Exhibition "Together against Sexism" can be seen on campus

From April 30 to May 30, the exhibition "Together against Sexism" can  be seen on campus. The poster series provides clear and low-threshold information about the topic of sexism and offers opportunities to deepen knowledge and reflect on one's own behavior. Members of TU Dortmund University have the opportunity to view the exhibition at the following locations and to talk about it:

April 30 till May 14: Department of Mechanical Engineering, Foyer Mechanical Engineering I, Leonhard-Euler-Straße 5

May 15 till May 31: Department of Computer Science, Foyer, Otto-Hahn-Str. 14

The focus of the exhibition is on everyday sexism, sexism in the workplace, in public spaces as well as in culture and the media. It also offers tips and effective measures against sexism and deals with the topic of intersectionality.

The exhibition is available in German and via QR code also as a voice output. It can be visited daily during the building's opening hours and is freely accessible.

The exhibition "Together against Sexism" is an offer of the alliance "Together against Sexism" and is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.

Gilda Sahebi speaks on the topic of hate speech – and how we can address it with it

The highlight of Diversity Month will be a keynote speech at the 13th German Diversity Day on 27 May 2025. In view of the current global developments, this year we are focusing on the topic of hate speech. In her lecture, journalist, physician and political scientist Gilda Sahebi will discuss how hate speech endangers democracies and how it can be countered. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to exchange ideas with Gilda Sahebi and other participants.

In good weather, the event will take place in the green lecture hall at Martin-Schmeißer-Platz (diagonally opposite the Mathetower), in bad weather in lecture hall I at Emil-Figge-Str. 50.   Registration is not necessary.

The event is  based on an awareness concept that is intended to support a constructive and low-discrimination framework.

For all those who cannot join for the lecture, the Queer* Peers are offering an online Diversity Talk "On dealing with digital violence and hate speech" with Sciecomm on May 13, 2025 from 4 to 5 p.m. Registration is not required here either.
