Networks of different diversity, equality and anti-discrimination stakeholders have launched the "Universities show attitude" campaign. The aim is to set an example for an open, supportive and free academic and university culture. At the same time, the aim is to draw attention to the existing anti-democratic influences and attacks to which actors at universities are exposed. All members of TU Dortmund University are invited to join the action.

Background to the campaign

The freedom of research and teaching is a central foundation of our democracy. Universities are places of free exchange, scientific curiosity and critical thinking.

The rise of anti-democratic forces that demand massive interference in academic content in their election manifestos poses an acute threat. Even "centrist" parties have already implemented anti-science measures by restricting gender-equitable language or cutting funding. In addition, researchers and students who are politically active are increasingly exposed to repression. Scientific findings are denied, researchers are defamed and universities come under pressure to exclude uncomfortable topics.

These developments affect all members of every university and university policy committee work. Universities thrive on diversity, openness and critical exchange. When these values come under threat, we must act together.

The campaign has been running since October 13, 2025 and is a clear statement and commitment to fundamental democratic values. It raises awareness of the latest political developments and the dangers they pose for a democratic and solidary university culture. The campaign was initiated by the Network for Anti-Discrimination at Universities, the Network for Diversity at Universities and the Federal Conference of Women's and Equal Opportunities Officers at Universities (bukof), among others. TU Dortmund University is a member of these networks.
