Language makes classism - workshop for employees

- SchuDS

Dear TU Dortmund University employees,
Focal point, asocial, work-shy - how people or places are labeled says a lot about (un)conscious prejudices regarding social background.
Nowadays, it is popular to talk about topics such as race or gender; the less cool topic is classism (bell hooks 2020)
Classism is a devaluation based on actual or assumed social position (such as school/educational qualifications, occupation/income, style of dress, dialect, etc.). Classism limits access to education, participation, recognition and many other resources and often goes hand in hand with other forms of discrimination.
This workshop deals with the connection between language and classist patterns of interpretation and offers the opportunity to critically reflect on and improve one's own work through increased sensitivity to classism.
