How can we create safe spaces for discussion about antisemitism and anti-Muslim racism, and make it possible to talk openly about strong emotions such as anger, hurt, and grief? This workshop teaches methods and provides opportunities for reflection on how to address these issues.

The Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, and the war in Gaza are having an impact on social debates and community life. At the same time, anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim racist incidents and discourse have become more visible. In this complex landscape of tensions, diverse and, in some cases, overlapping experiences of being affected intersect.

The workshop organized by the “zusammen_denken” project of IDA NRW (Information and Documentation Center for Anti-Racism Work in North Rhine-Westphalia) provides a space to examine these different perspectives together. Among other things, the workshop addresses the question of how to (re)establish safe spaces for communication and make it possible to discuss strong emotions such as anger, hurt, and grief.

The speakers, Saloua Mohammed and Simon Sidney Hölscher, will present approaches, methods, and strategies for addressing this topic in a way that is critical of racism and anti-Semitism. At the same time, the workshop offers a space for reflection and discussion about participants’ own perspectives and experiences.

The workshop is open to students at TU Dortmund University, Ruhr University Bochum, and the University of Duisburg-Essen.
