New Guide on “International Students with Children” from the German Student Services Organization (Deutsches Studierendenwerk)

The publication of the guide “International Students with Children: Residency and Social Welfare Regulations” is intended to support advisors at universities.

The background to this is that, due to the growing number of international students, counseling centers at student services organizations and universities are increasingly confronted with complex questions regarding residency, family life, and social benefits.

The publication offers advisors practical guidance on the legal framework governing residence status as well as the potential social benefits to which international student parents may be entitled. It explains the conditions under which certain benefits can be accessed and the potential implications this may have for residence status. The content is clearly presented in an FAQ format and is supplemented by information boxes and example cases. In addition, the appendix contains a tabular overview of family benefits based on the respective residence status.

The author of the guide is Prof. Dr. jur. Dorothee Frings. The publication is available in German both as a print edition and in an accessible online version; an English-language online version is to follow.
