Israel-Related Anti-Semitism as an Educational and Social Challenge

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is often the subject of controversial debates and evokes strong emotions. In public discourse, we repeatedly see simplistic finger-pointing, the demonization of Israel, or the problematic equating of Jewish people with the actions of the State of Israel. Such patterns of interpretation have become significantly more visible and intense since October 7, 2023. At the same time, the question is increasingly being raised as to when anti-Semitism related to Israel is present and how educators and civil society actors can address it appropriately.

The workshop begins with a concise introduction to the historical background and developments of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Building on this foundation, participants will examine the manifestations, motives, and effects of Israel-related antisemitism using concrete examples. The goal is to raise awareness of antisemitic narratives in the context of the Middle East conflict, to highlight their impact on those affected, and at the same time to create space for questions, reflection, and addressing one’s own uncertainties.

The workshop does not focus on evaluating current military actions or political developments in the Middle East. Rather, the aim is to recognize Israel-related antisemitism as a specific form of antisemitism, to understand its consequences for Jewish life and social coexistence, and to develop strategies for one’s own educational or professional practice. The workshop will therefore conclude with a collaborative development of strategies for addressing such situations.

The workshop is part of the event program of the “Network to Combat Antisemitism” and is aimed at educators, staff from educational, youth, and social institutions, government officials, and other key influencers.
